The Presidio, a military installation on the northern tip of San Francisco, has historically been governed by Spanish, Mexican, and American forces. Baker Beach is a section of the Presidio. It made for the ideal defensive position with its expansive vistas of the Pacific Ocean and desirable placement at the mouth of the Golden Gate. In order to defend the city and the shoreline, the U.S. Army erected a massive 50-ton “disappearing” gun in 1904. Despite being decommissioned, Battery Chamberlain is still visible on the shore. Getting There
Using the Muni system in San Francisco, you can get to Baker Beach by boarding the 29 Sunset bus, which serves the city’s western neighborhoods. The PresidiGo Shuttle is another way to get there. The Presidio’s woodland acres are traversed by this free shuttle bus, which makes numerous stops along the way, including Baker Beach. Take the Presidio Hills path from the Main Lawn area’s Presidio Visitor Center.
Traditional taxis, ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber, and automobile rentals can take you to Baker Beach. Parking is provided close to the beach; however, it is scarce and frequently fills up on sunny days. Also, if you are hiring a car, kindly be reminded not to leave any valuables in it.
What to Pack
